The Ultimate Multitaskers: Preschool Teachers

From the outside, the role of a preschool teacher probably seems like any other job, albeit one that’s historically described as successful. That’s why you’ve heard the phrase, “I’m so thankful for my kid’s teachers, I could never do it!” More times than you can likely count.

All of that is true. Being a preschool teacher takes a special person, and it takes an unwavering commitment and dedication to young children. But one of the big reasons for that is that being a preschool teacher isn’t just a job— it’s a combination of several different jobs in our society.

An Artist

Preschool teachers must play the role of creative artist to plan age-appropriate and open-ended art activities—all while managing to instill a love of creativity and imagination in the children they’re teaching.

A Musician

From dancing, to educational songs, to theme-related music and productive movement activities, teachers are constantly calling upon their knowledge of music and arts to liven their programs, but also reach their students in different ways, since we know children respond to learning at a much deeper level she it’s done through memorable songs and rhymes.

A Scientist

To plan safe and simple science activities, preschool teachers must have a solid foundational in scientific principles and safety precautions, and then know how to apply them into age-appropriate experiments and activities that are not only engaging, but educational.

A Psychologist

One of a preschool teacher’s greatest responsibilities is to be in tune with their students, listening carefully to not only what they say, but how they’re acting. They have to be aware of their student’s body language at all times, and recognize when their students may be struggling.

A First Responder

Every preschool teacher is a first responder. Not only do they tend to the daily bumps, blimps and bruises that are impossible to avoid with young children, but they are also aware they would sacrifice their own life to save the children’s lives in emergency situations. That is more than any bullet point in a job description—it is a holistic, lifelong commitment to the children they teach.

A Safe Place

Being a preschool teacher is a 24/7 job, and at the end of it all a  preschool teacher still needs to be a safe place for her student. A place where they feel seen, understood, and safe to learn, grow and love. Because none of what a preschool teacher does day in and day out is possible without the power of love, education, and nurturing in a secure and loving place that will have the best and lasting results.

**Everyday, we are immensely thankful for our preschool teachers. Without them, there would be no Simon Center.
